About Massena Electric The Town of Massena Electric Department (MED) is a municipal electric utility owned by the Town of Massena. The Town of Massena is located in St. Lawrence County in the northernmost part of New York State. Massena Electric Department was created by a resolution of the Massena Town Board. The resolution was approved May 30, 1974, pursuant to a mandatory voter referendum. MED began operations May 8, 1981. Massena Electric is governed by a five person administrative board known as the “Massena Electric Utility Board” (MEUB). Members of the MEUB are appointed to five year terms by the Town Board of the Town of Massena. The MEUB appoints a Superintendent to serve as the General Manager of the utility. Massena Electric Department is one of 47 municipally owned power companies in New York State. The MED system covers 131 square miles with more than 9,000 customers. Massena Electric provides businesses and residents with energy at rates that are the lowest 10 percent nationally. In 2002 the new Engstrom Substation went on line enabling future load growth for existing and potential customers. Our service reliability is among the highest by leading indicators, as is our environmental commitment. In partnership with the Massena Chamber of Commerce, New York Power Authority, SLIC, and other business located in the North Country, MED plans on continuing this long-standing commitment to both our business and residential customers.
